SUBURBIA 001-004
Suburbia: Nothing
Happens. A house-lined, desolate street. Across the street from
our point of view, a red house with white trim. The garage door
opens, a woman exits and empties her trash. The garage door shuts.
Nothing. A leaf skips in the street. Nothing. A UPS van barrels
past the houses with their green lawn in front, between, in back.
Nothing.
The setting:
Skylab gallery; the building entrance at street level shared with
a barbershop; on the fifth floor, the gallery. A series of four
flip books made from video clips are hanging into the center of
the elevator. The content: the scenes above. Fake grass on the walls,
birdsong can be heard. The intent: A comment on social interaction
in suburbia, the elevator, the gallery. An invitation to take an
alternate route, to look, not stare, to touch, to circulate, to
huddle. The result: a crowded elevator, visitors take multiple rides
without exiting, the books are passed from one to another visitor,
rumors start in the gallery about activities behind the curtains
of the little red house. The space between: activated.
