Larson Shindelman

Since 2007, I have extensively collaborated with artist Marni Shindelman

Our most well-known project is Geolocation, in which we use publicly available embedded GPS information in Twitter updates to track the locations of user posts and make photographs to mark the location in the real world. Our act of making a photograph anchors and memorializes the ephemeral online data in the real world and also probes the expectations of privacy surrounding social networks.

The first phase of Geolocation (2009-2016) took us across the US, from New York to Los Angeles, as well as to Canada and England. Flash Powder Projects published a monograph of this work in January 2016.

The second phase, #Gratitude (2016-2018), took us to Russia. We photographed tweets with the hashtag #ThanksPutinForThis and photographed the sister hashtag #ThanksObama in the US. We are shaping this work into our second book.

The third phase, #Mobilize (2018), examines the power of social media to organize for social justice. A selection of this work is installed at the George Eastman Museum through June 2019.
